The building sector is the biggest consumer of energy in Greece, utilising approximately 36% of the total energy consumption in the country. Moreover, the energy consumed for heating of buildings is estimated at 60% of the total energy needs, while this consumption is increasing at a rate of 2% per year. The high energy consumption in buildings is largely attributed to the large average age of the building stock in Greece, a large proportion of which was built several decades ago, without special insulation requirements.
Obviously, there are considerable potential energy savings in the residential building sector, and the sector of buildings’ energy upgrade is expected to develop significantly during the next years. Special subsidy programs are already running, as the for instance program “Saving Energy at Home” with subsidies provided by the Greek Ministry of Environment.
